How do I change my major to Industrial Engineering?

ALL STUDENTS

  • (first year and non first years) must be in Good academic standing, meaning cannot be on Academic Warning, Probation, nor Dismissal. This information can be found at the top of your degreeworks. If you are not in good academic standing, we will reconsider your change of major request at the end of the semester once grades are released
  • All students regardless of matriculation term or credit hours earned must attend a change of major info session.

Admitted First Year Students – attend change of major session

First Year students (non-transfers) are allowed one major change during their first academic year (Summer 2025-Spring 2026). After attending the change of major session, students may submit the change of major form to the ISyE Academic Office (Sudie Davis), however the form will not be submitted to the GT Registrar’s office until after the deadline for withdrawal from classes with a W grade in the term in which the student has attended an info session. See here for the GT Academic Calendar.

Current GT students (non-First Year) – attend change of major session
GT students who matriculated at Georgia Tech beginning in the Spring 2025 semester or before must follow the ISyE Change of Major requirements below.

Transfer Students from other Universities – attend change of major session and follow requirements for non first year students.
ISyE follows GT Change of Major rules in addition to specific ISyE change of major requirements below.

Requirements for Non-First Year and Transfer Students:
ISyE change of major candidates must complete the following four GT courses:

  • ENGL 1102* or PSYC 1101*
  • CS 1301*, or CS 1371 .
    • If you have not taken any CS class, take CS 1301. We will only use CS 1371 if you have already taken it when you start the COM process.
    • CS 2316 is a required course for ISyE. We will use this towards COM if you brought in transfer or AP/IB credit for 1301 or 1371.
  • MATH 2603
  • ISyE 2027

If you have transfer credit for these courses, ISyE will pick an appropriate substitute course for you to take. Please email Sudie Davis.

Additionally, change of major candidates must:

  • Earn at least a C in each of the four courses listed above;
  • Earn at least a 3.0 average in the four courses, weighing each course equally;
  • Have an overall Georgia Tech GPA of at least 3.0; and
  • Have a Georgia Tech letter grade for the four courses (no transfer or AP/IB credit accepted).

General guideline for registration:

Please note: being in the process of changing to ISYE does not grant you the ability to sign up for upper level ISYE classes. You must follow major restriction rules until you have met the requirements to officially change into ISYE.

Important Info to know

  • All ISYE classes are major restricted until the Wednesday of the first week of classes in any semester. We will not grant any permits for non ISYE students.
  • ISYE 2027 requires a pre-req or co-req of MATH 2550/2551
