As aluminum inventory moves through the manufacturing process, material can become at risk of expiring before it is shipped to a customer. The acceptable age of inventory varies by product, customer, and application, making it difficult to identify which inventory is most at risk and what actions should be taken. The objective of this project is to develop a data-driven process or tool for identifying inventory at risk of becoming obsolete or expired and recommending actions to maximize inventory utilization.
Key areas of focus include:
• A methodology for prioritizing inventory based on risk of expiration or obsolescence utilizing sales data and customer demand
• An inventory aging tool that highlights high-risk inventory and estimates whether inventory is likely to be consumed by its expiration date
• A decision framework that recommends actions for at-risk inventory, including reassignment to alternate customers, applications, or products when feasible
Expected benefits include reduced expired or obsolete inventory, improved working capital, and Improved planner decision-making through proactive alerts and recommendations.
