Emory Healthcare is the most comprehensive academic health system in Georgia. The organization supports clinical care, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives across multiple hospitals and provider locations. A key focus of this project is Emory’s mortality review process, which is used to help clinical teams learn from patient care experiences, review patient deaths in a structured way, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.The client is seeking support in optimizing a future-state mortality review workflow that involves multiple review tiers, including frontline clinical review, Quality & Patient Safety review, clinical subject matter expert review, and multidisciplinary Mortality Committee review.
Client Needs:
Emory Healthcare needs a recommended solution and prototype for a more innovative and scalable digital mortality review platform. The current vendor platform supports portions of the electronic review process, but it does not fully meet the organization’s long-term needs for customization, workflow automation, integration, and AI-enabled capabilities.
The client needs Georgia Tech capstone students to help:
• Evaluate the proposed future-state mortality review workflow
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and timeliness in the review process
• Recommend ways to increase completion of frontline clinician reviews
• Support case progression across multiple review tiers
• Assess gaps in the current vendor workflow/forms
• Translate stakeholder requirements into a conceptual digital solution
• Explore how automation and AI could be safely and effectively incorporated
• Develop a prototype or conceptual platform design
• Recommend implementation considerations for scalability, governance, and future adoption
• Strengthening Emory’s ability to identify and act on quality and patient safety opportunities
