Georgia Power

Client Profile

Georgia Power is the largest subsidiary of Southern Company, one of the nation’s leading energy providers. Georgia Power is an investor-owned utility serving 2.7 million customers in all but four of Georgia’s 159 counties.

Energy is essential to all our lives, and our diverse generation portfolio and dedicated, world-class workforce help to keep it reliable. Whether it’s by updating our electric grid to make it smarter and more resilient, constantly working on innovative ways to generate and store energy, or restoring power quickly and safely after an outage, we are committed to keeping our communities powered 24/7.

Project Description

During power outages, Georgia Power communicates with customers and provides estimated restoration times (ERTs) related to those outage events. In order to communicate with customers more quickly in response to outages, Georgia Power utilizes historical outage data to predict ERTs based on the type of outage event before a crew has been assigned to that event to make repairs. In widespread outage events, such as major weather events like a hurricane or ice storm, many different factors can have a significant impact on ERTs.

The ISyE team will be tasked with leveraging historical ERT data to develop and refine ERT guidance for outage events considering different factors such as outage timing (weekday vs. weekend), outage event type, and storm type (thunderstorm, hurricane, ice storm, etc.). This project provides the team an opportunity to work with real-world scenarios and utilize data analytics to drive process improvements that will make a tangible impact for Georgia Power customers across the state.
