Industrial engineering, operations research, and systems engineering are fields of study intended for individuals who are interested in analyzing and formulating abstract models of complex systems with the intention of improving system performance. Unlike traditional disciplines in engineering and the mathematical sciences, the fields address the role of the human decision-maker as key contributor to the inherent complexity of systems and primary benefactor of the analyses.

Cyrille Combettes is a Ph.D. candidate in Machine Learning at the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering. He received a M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from École Centrale Paris and a Master of Business Analytics from MIT.
Cyrille's research interests lie at the intersection of optimization and machine learning. His current work focuses on designing fast and sparse methods in convex optimization. Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Cyrille has worked on multiple real-world analytics projects, including as Data Scientist Intern at BCG GAMMA and as Research Assistant at MIT's Operations Research Center.
