Industrial engineering, operations research, and systems engineering are fields of study intended for individuals who are interested in analyzing and formulating abstract models of complex systems with the intention of improving system performance. Unlike traditional disciplines in engineering and the mathematical sciences, the fields address the role of the human decision-maker as key contributor to the inherent complexity of systems and primary benefactor of the analyses.

The Home Depot
Today, The Home Depot is the world's largest home improvement retailer with approximately 500,000 orange-blooded associates and more than 2,200 stores in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The typical store today averages 105,000 square feet of indoor retail space, interconnected with an e-commerce business that offers more than one million products for the DIY customer, professional contractors, and the industry's largest installation business for the Do-It-For-Me customer.
The Home Depot has tremendous scale in home improvement, delivering tens of millions of customer orders across online, store and appliance networks. The Home Depot is building out a new last mile delivery network for big and bulky home improvement products. Managing delivery asset capacity with geographic markets is a critical component in ensuring customers have choices when scheduling a delivery. THD currently segments markets into smaller zones and places trucks within each zone. This project will evaluate the current methodology to create and capacitize zones and determine how frequently zones should be reoptimized based on seasonal sales patterns. THD is building out a network of cross-dock facilities that will expand next day delivery coverage in the US. These facilities fulfill markets via delivery zones with dedicated delivery slots. The project team will evaluate the current process to define zones and make recommendations for improvement. The team will then develop a methodology to resize zones and reposition trucks based on seasonal demand to ensure sufficient delivery capacity is available. The team will also analyze processes within the facilities that fulfill these deliveries and identify opportunities. The project team will create a model to define last mile delivery zones and position trucks within those zones to maximize capacity. This model should leverage sales forecasting data and evaluate the tradeoff between capacity and asset cost. The team will make recommendations on a re-zoning cadence that minimizes operational disruption within the facility four-walls.
The team will analyze large datasets; strong quantitative skills and a knowledge of statistics and data analysis is preferred. Supply Chain, Analytics, Engineering, or a related field of study is ideal. Experience with SQL, python, R, Tableau or similar tools is also preferred.
