Senior Design Alumni Mentoring Program

ISyE alumni can help senior design students a great deal with the transformation from students to professionals with their experience in the real world. The program will be run concurrently with Senior Design. The mentors can help our students to nurture the professionalism, team spirit, leadership skills, communication skills, and proper protocol with clients and colleagues. Volunteers are not expected to assist in presentation preparation, report writing or technical matters.

Effort

Over the course of the Spring or Fall semester (perhaps even starting a few weeks before the semester), each volunteer is expected to spend a total of 2-4 hours with one of the Senior Design teams. The Fall semester is from mid Auguest to mid December and Spring semester is from Early January to end of April. At the first meeting, the team’s faculty advisor should be present.

Desirable mentor characteristics

  • Worked for 3 or more years as a professional or engineer
  • Has experience managing 2 or more people
  • Understands and accepts our Senior Design goals
  • Interested in coaching young engineers

Rules

The mentor program is voluntary for both students and alumni. Potential conflicts of interest should be avoided (e.g., a mentor should not work for a competitor of their team's client or a consulting company working with the client).
