Winners of the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering’s (ISyE) first photo contest were announced on September 25, 2008. The theme of this years contest was “interacting and exploring other cultures” and was open to all faculty, staff, and students. Photographs were entered into one of two categories: ISyE Faculty and Students Exploring Other Countries or ISyE International Students Exploring the United States. No limit was set on the number of photographs an individual could submit. For this first contest, seven members of the ISyE community submitted thirty-nine photographs. Two PhD students captured the attention of our judges and ran away with a majority of the awards. They are: Clarence Wardell III and Feng Qiu. All winning photos will be featured in the upcoming issue of ISyE’s Alumni Magazine.

1st place: Doctoral Student Clarence Wardell III
Photograph Title: Woman in Rice Field
Description: During the spring of 2008, I traveled to the INNOVATE Conference on Globalization and Technology as a part of the Georgia Tech delegation. The conference took us to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and Singapore for ten days. “Woman in the Rice Field” was taken in Vietnam during the course of this trip. As we traveled from the city center out to the Mekong Delta, our bus stopped on the road alongside a rice field. There were several workers harvesting rice in the field. The temperature was extremely hot, very near 100 degrees, and as you can see the women are dressed to protect themselves from exposure to the sun.

Description: In Fall 2007, I made a trip to Rome, Italy over the Thanksgiving break. While there, I had a chance to experience some of the ancient treasures that the city has to offer. This particular photo was captured while at the Castel Sant’ Angelo. The woman is peering onto the city below, while in the background an image of St. Perter’s Basilica can be seen.

Description: This picture was taken in Alanya, Turkey. Alanya is in the south of Turkey, along the coast.

Photograph Title: The Mekong Market
Description: As we arrived at the Mekong Delta, we traveled by boat along the river. As in most areas, the river is used as a mode by which goods are transported. There is a market along the Delta, to which this man was headed to sell his goods.

Description: This is the first place in the United States that I visited. I have beautiful memories of that area.

Description: I was traveling along one rainy winter day in Chicago when I took this picture. I was thousands of miles from my home in Central China. Yet Chicago’s Magnificent Mile reminded me of the WaiTan river bank in ShangHai.

Description: I grew up with Disney cartoons. Finally I’m here. All the happy times from childhood came to my mind during this trip.
Photographs were numbered and sent to the judges for review. Each photo was judged on its relevance to the specific category in which it was entered as well as composition and quality.
