Thunderbird 2 Setup Instructions for the New IMAP Accounts

NOTE: Thunderbird 2 is no longer current. For information on obtaining and installing Thunderbird 3 read this entry.

Problem:

How do I set up my new IMAP email account on a new or existing installation of Thunderbird?



Solution:

Configuring Thunderbird 2.0.0.4

New Installation

1. Download thunderbird from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/
2. Install using all the default setup options. Then close the application
3. Start up thunderbird and when select the option that says dont import anything on the import wizard

4. Select "Email account" and click "Next".


5. Enter your full name and preferred email address (for example, allen.belletti@isye.gatech.edu), click "Next".


6. Select server type "IMAP", enter "imap.isye.gatech.edu" as Incoming Server.
7. Enter "mail.isye.gatech.edu" as the Outgoing Server, click "Next".

8.Enter your ISyE account name (for example, "allen") as the Incoming User Name.
9.Enter the same account name as the Outgoing User Name, click "Next".

10.Choose a name for this account such as "ISyE IMAP Mail" and click "Next".

11. If everything is correct, click "Finish".
12. When prompted for your password click on cancel since setup is not complete

13. Then click on Tools then Account settings from the menu bar.
14. Click on "Server Settings" located beneath the name of your new account, in the left-hand portion of the window.
15. Under "Security Settings" on the right side, select "TLS"

16. Click on "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" at the bottom of the leftmost portion of the window.
17. Make sure that "Use name and password" is checked, and enter your account name next to "User Name".
18. Click the button next to "TLS" (not "TLS, if available")
19. Set the Port to 587

20. Click OK , then OK again.You are now ready to read and send email using Thunderbird.
