STUDENT COMPUTER ACCOUNTS

Acquire an Account

STEP 1: Acquire a Georgia Tech Account

All faculty, staff, students, and long-term visitors must apply for and/or activate an individual GT account. Accounts are administered through the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and enable account holders access to a variety of resources and services. In most instances, GT Accounts are automatically created (e.g. when a student registers for classes, when faculty or staff are hired, when a visitor files all appropriate paperwork), but not yet activated.

STEP 2: Activate Your GT Account

Students must appear in person at the OIT Customer Support Center (CSC) in the main lobby of the Rich Information Technology building or at the Information Services Desk in the Library and show a picture ID.

Faculty and Staff members may appear in person at the OIT Customer Support Center (CSC) in the main lobby of the Rich Information Technology building and show picture ID, or they may ask Mark Iken or Lawrence Sharp to contact the OIT Customer Support Center at (404) 894-7173.

Please visit http://faq.oit.gatech.edu/ for more information. You are required to have a GT Account before you can apply for an ISyE UNIX account!

STEP 3: Acquire an ISyE Account

New ISyE faculty, staff, long-term visitors, and GRADUATE students can also apply for an ISyE UNIX account.

An ISyE UNIX account provides for the following:

  • A UNIX account w/home directory and access to the appropriate UNIX resources
  • An ISyE email account*

*It is highly recommended that all mail from your GT/PRISM account be forwarded to your ISyE account so that you will receive graduate and undergraduate mailings.

The following does not require an ISyE UNIX account.

  • Buzzcard access for physical access to the ISyE buildings and undergraduate and graduate labs. Newly registered ISyE students are automatically added to our Buzzcard system the week a semester starts. If your Buzzcard fails to work, please email helpdesk@isye.gatech.edu noting your fullname and GTID.
  • Login access to the computers located in the undergraduate and graduate labs. Computers located in these labs have a common login username and password which is clearly posted in each room.

You must first activate your GT Account and obtain a Buzzcard since you must provide this information to establish an ISyE account. PLEASE NOTE THAT IT USUALLY TAKES 24-48 HOURS TO PROCESS AN ACCOUNT REQUEST.

An application for an ISyE account is available online at
http://www.isye.gatech.edu/apps/unix-account/
.

The following information relates to questions we are frequently asked when users first activate their ISyE UNIX account. We ask that you please refer to the ISyE Knowledgebase before logging a HelpDesk request.

How to Login Using Your ISyE Computer Account

Connect to an ISyE host computer from your computer using ssh2. The computer you are connecting from should be running some form of ssh connectivity product (e.g. SecureCRT, PuTTY, Cygwin, MacSSH, etc.) The following system is available for you to connect to directly, and is recommended for reading and sending e-mail:

castle.isye.gatech.edu
(see the ISyE Knowledgebase for more info)

IMPORTANT! DO NOT login to any other systems without obtaining permission, as these events are logged, and can be cause for your account to be disabled.

Changing your account password on ISyE

You should consider changing your account password at regular intervals (such as every semester). To change your ISyE password, log into castle.isye.gatech.edu using your ISyE username.

After logging in to your ISyE user account:

castle > ssh password
Password: (enter your existing isye password)
$passwd
passwd: Changing password for mungai
Enter existing login password: (Note-- Passwords won't show as you type them!)
New Password:
Re-enter new Password:
passwd: password successfully changed for mungai

The password update normally takes about fifteen minutes for all the systems to become aware of the change, so don't panic!

Remote Dial-in

The Office of Information Technology and ISyE DO NOT MAINTAIN OR SUPPORT REMOTE ACCESS TO THE CAMPUS NETWORK. Users must secure internet access through an outside source (ISPs-Mindspring, AOL, etc.).

Using a Personal Computer at ISyE

ISyE does not let individuals with non-ISyE purchased/administered hardware simply "plug-in" to our network. For those interested in using a personal laptop or desktop to gain internet access within the ISyE buildings, we suggest you take advantage of Georgia Tech's LAWN if you have an OIT central account and the FASTPASS pay service if you do not. Georgia Tech faculty and staff can sponsor guest LAWN accounts for campus visitors.
