ACADEMIC ADVISING

The H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering's academic advising experience is personal and hands-on.

Advising Mission Statement

As academic advisors, it is our mission to treat each student as if they are the most important student at Georgia Tech.  We shall treat each with respect and dignity and shall strive to guide them in making wise decisions.

In working through excellence as academic advisors, we shall strive to be proactive, equal and fair with all student populations, including at-potential students, students of diverse backgrounds, multicultural and underrepresented students.

We are committed to help students become self-starters who will take ownership of their education and well being, resulting in a higher retention rate.

Advisors’ Goals

Our goal is to provide a supportive environment for our students.  We strive to assist them in achieving self-understanding and self-acceptance throughout their experience at Georgia Tech.  Aside from helping students choose workable schedules each semester and work out long-term schedules, we are available:

  • To mentor students personally and academically in a realistic manner
  • To help students to take ownership of their education
  • To guide students to be excellent academically and personally by using our expertise to bring out the best of each student
  • To be proactive with at-potential students, students of underrepresented groups and students from multicultural and diverse backgrounds
  • To assist students in identifying educational plans consistent with their goals and objectives
  • To help students with their decision-making skills
  • To help students understand policies, procedures, and programs, on both the School and Institute levels
  • To teach students the available resources at Georgia Tech and in the community that can enhance their academic and personal goals
  • To promote
    1. Self-starters
    2. Independence
    3. Well being
    4. High retention rate

Patti Parker and Valarie DuRant-Modeste have many years of experience working with Georgia Tech students. Patti has been at Tech since 1978 and Valarie since 1993. Through the years, they have fine-tuned their advising strategies and methods and feel that the advising program in ISyE is one of the best on campus.

Advisement is not mandatory but students are urged to see Patti or Valarie at least once a semester. The friendly and relaxed atmosphere puts students at ease and assures them of a helpful, unrushed experience.
